We’re drawing inspiration from the Cruise Control Console, our colorful boatwood TV cabinet, to help you elevate the look of your flat screen TV and entertainment center.

A television is a large, black canvas that can take up a lot of space. And each video, gaming, and stereo system comes with its own cords and remotes. All of these extras can create a jumbled mess and distract from the design of your room.

Yes, there are some practical considerations when selecting a cabinet for your TV. It should have storage for your entertainment accessories. It should place your TV at the correct height for viewing.

But don’t let practicality get in the way of beauty. You can choose a console and display method that brings classy design into the equation, whether through color, shape, or texture. Here are some smart and stylish ideas for your entertainment center.

Draw Attention to the Cabinet

Here’s what we have in mind with our Cruise Control Console, where bold swaths of color and textured boatwood paint pull the eye away from the contrasting TV screen.

The photo above gives another example. The television is a black design element that emphasizes the bright blue of the cabinet and the vintage map. The map helps to further frame the TV and camouflage it on the wall.

Put It on Wheels

If you want the flexibility to move your TV from the family room to the dining room for the big game, consider a TV console with wheels.

Make sure the wheels are large and sturdy enough to hold the weight of the console and TV and to roll smoothly over floors and carpets. Buy a long extension cord and some cable management supplies so you can store all cords at the back of the console. Look for a console with shelves to hold books, remotes, and media systems.

A rolling TV console can also be used as a room divider in a small space.

Create an Art Gallery Wall

Filling a wall with frames is another way to add visual interest and make a black space disappear into the crowd.

Whether you’re mounting a flat screen on the wall or putting it on a console unit, hang a variety of art pieces around it. This is a particularly fun, affordable, and easy way to beautify your home theatre.

Keep It Small in Small Spaces

You can stylishly incorporate a TV into the smallest of spaces. When choosing your screen, keep it in proportion to your wall size or space restrictions. Measure your space and consider where a TV will best fit and where it can easily be viewed.

Once you’ve got your small-scale TV, don’t just plunk it on a table and leave it at that. Maximize your storage and display by choosing an attractive cabinet with shelves and drawers. Add pictures, plants, and books that complement your space.

There’s no reason to go boring when you’re choosing functional furniture for your entertainment center. Your TV display can be a feast for the eyes even when the show is over.
