The entrance to your home is, of course, the first thing that you and your guests see when you arrive. Even strangers passing by on the street have a chance to appreciate the look of your front yard and the façade of your house.

To set the right tone for homecoming and put your best foot forward in the neighborhood, make it a priority to pay attention to the furniture and décor that occupies this prime spot.

Botanicals Are Your Best Friends

Landscaping doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with some research on what plants and shrubs do best in your area. Clean up your flower beds and put in a variety of heights and types of plants.

Use small perennial trees and shrubs to make the beds seem full in the winter when all the other plants are gone.

Use potted planters to flank your doorway for extra interest. You can change these up seasonally too — think pansies in spring and cedar boughs for winter.

Keep Things Fresh

Consider painting the outside of your house, or even just freshening up the window frames. Choose a neutral colour scheme for the siding and frames and perhaps a pop of colour for the door.

Think about making an investment to paint the exterior brick if it’s a dated colour, which will instantly make it look fresh and modern and fresh. Installing lighting, shutters, window boxes, or hanging planters adds a great deal of aesthetic value to the look of your home.

If you have a wooden porch, you could also paint the floorboards, perhaps with a patterned accent area to look like a trompe-l’œil rug.

Outdoor Furniture

This is the icing on the cake. Arrange a cozy and inviting seating area with room for a few guests to gather on the front porch or patio. A bench and two chairs is all you need.

To keep your seating area looking well-tended, style the furniture for different seasons, using gourds and leaves for fall and potted plants in summer.
